home-purified-water-wayneThe concept of soft water is far from a new one. In fact, it’s been around for hundreds of years, and, like all other things that have been around for so long, it’s taken on its fair share of myths.

Are you curious about the myths associated with soft water? Then read below! We’re going to discuss some of the most common soft water myths in Wayne, Illinois.

Myth: Soft Water Deprives Us of Necessary Minerals

As you might know, hard water contains calcium and magnesium. Conversely, soft water is free of calcium and magnesium. This leads some to believe is that consuming soft water instead of hard water deprives one of necessary minerals. After all, calcium and magnesium are needed by the human body.

However, while it’s true that soft water won’t supply you with any calcium or magnesium, the fact of the matter is that you’ll have no trouble finding your calcium and magnesium elsewhere. Calcium and magnesium are found in plenty of foods, and they are ingested on a regular basis by the vast majority of human beings.

Myth: Soft Water Tastes Salty

Another soft water myth that tends to float around is the myth that soft water is salty. While this myth is rooted in logical thought (salt is added to a water softener in order for it to operate), it is ultimately false.

Sodium is added to soft water in exchange for calcium and magnesium particles, but it’s added in such small amounts so as to be negligible. In other words, it adds no taste whatsoever. While soft water may taste different than hard water, it’s primarily due to the fact that calcium and magnesium are absent from it.

Myth: Soft Water Contains Excess Amounts of Sodium

Because water softeners transfer sodium ions in exchange for calcium and magnesium ions, some believe soft water to contain an excess amount of sodium. As such, they believe that it can be detrimental to one’s heart health.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. The amount of sodium added to water by a water softener is so small that it couldn’t possibly have a negative effect on one’s health. For reference, an 8-ounce glass of low-fat milk has around 3 times as much sodium as an 8-ounce glass of softened water.

Myth: Soft Water Leaves a Slime on the Skin

Some individuals swear that soft water leaves a slime or film on their skin after using it to take a shower. However, the truth of the matter is that it’s the exact opposite: hard water leaves a film on the skin, while soft water leaves the skin spotless.

Now, it is true that soft water can cause the skin to feel slippery. However, this is more to do with the fact that it creates more soap suds.

Myth: Soft Water Contains No Contaminants

The last myth we’re going to discuss is the myth that soft water contains no contaminants. While soft water is free of calcium and magnesium, it most certainly contains other minerals, chemicals, and bacteria.

If you want to remove contaminants other than calcium and magnesium from your water supply, you’ll have to install a different type of water conditioner. Read up on other water conditioning methods here!
